SPRINT Reusable Cups
Until now, reusable cups made of hard plastic were not used at the refreshment stations during the race, as they posed a safety risk for runners. On the one hand, they were so big that they were considered a tripping hazard, even if just a few of them ended up on the road and not in the bin or at the side of the road. Secondly, broken hard plastic cups with their sharp edges posed too great a risk of injury.
With the new SPRINT Reusable Cup, which was developed for SCC EVENTS by experts from the Alfred Wegener Institute and the company CUNA, we are now testing a reusable cup that poses no risk to runners. Thanks to the six predetermined breaking points and the newly developed material, this innovation is not only the answer to PET and cardboard cups at the refreshment stations. The new cup is also made from a granulate that consists predominantly renewable raw materials. Should the cup become defective after use or reach the end of its service life after up to 300 rinses, it can be 100% recycled, and the material can be transformed into new things.
Another advantage: the cup has particularly good flight properties. This is a much better way of ensuring that the cup really does end up in the bins and containers after use by the runners.
With our test run at the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON at one location at aid station 3, we will save 45,000 disposable cups (over 100 kg).
Here´s what you can do:
We will be testing the new reusable cup together with you for the first time at the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON at refreshment station 3 near Potsdamer Platz. After taking your drink, use the large, marked bins and toss the cup in there. This is the only way we can sustain the cycle and use the cups for the next events after cleaning them.
