Sabastian Sawe withdraws from the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON
Defending Champion and World Record Holder Sabastian Sawe has withdrawn from the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON on 27 September due to injury. The event remains packed with top-class athletes and promises to deliver an exceptional race, particularly in the women’s field.
"It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you I am forced to withdraw from the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON due to an injury. I had been looking forward to achieving something special on the streets of Berlin and crossing the finish line at the Brandenburg Gate. It was also my wish to give something back to the race and its organizers, who have supported me so much,” said Sabastian Sawe.

While Sabastian won’t be able to compete in Berlin this year, he sends his best wishes to everyone taking on the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON: "I want to thank everyone who continues to support me and I wish all the runners taking part a great race. I hope they can enjoy the moment, trust in the work they’ve done and be proud of what they achieve in Berlin. I look forward to seeing you again soon at the starting line in Berlin."
SCC EVENTS wishes him a speedy recovery
SCC EVENTS, organiser of the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON, regrets Sawe’s injury-related withdrawal and wishes him a speedy and full recovery. “We would have very much liked to see Sabastian Sawe back in Berlin. All the more, we regret that he will not be able to compete this year. We wish him all the best for his recovery and hope to welcome him back to the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON soon,” explains Race Director Mark Milde.
Top-class fields promise exciting races
Even without Sawe, the men’s field is packed with top-class athletes and promises an exciting battle for victory and fast times on Berlin’s unique course. The women’s race is likely to be particularly intriguing. Leading the high-calibre field is Tigst Assefa. The Ethiopian has won the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON twice and is returning to Berlin after setting the world record here in 2023. Her stated goal is to improve the marathon world record once again on Berlin’s fast course. The latest indications from her training camp are promising.
