Plogging Run at the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON

After an eventful weekend, things got active once again on Tuesday evening: during the plogging run, finishers and employees of SCC EVENTS, the organizer of the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON, came together to collect litter left behind in the event area.

Equipped with gloves, garbage bags, and litter pickers, the group moved through the Tiergarten and along Straße des 17. Juni. They removed waste that remained after the race weekend and the professional cleanup carried out by our waste management partner Alba.

Measures for responsible resource use

The plogging run built on initiatives already implemented before and during the event: Since 2023, the Berliner Stadtmission has been collecting used running shoes at the Expo for homeless people in Berlin. This year, a total of 1,173 pairs were donated. On race day, 60 volunteers from the Stadtmission also collected discarded clothing near the starting blocks—amounting to around 60 cubic meters in total. In addition, used drinking cups and thermal blankets were gathered by our volunteers and sent for recycling. Participants were also encouraged to contribute —whether by using their own hydration systems, returning thermal blankets, or disposing of cups in the designated bins at refreshment stations.

Setting an important example together

Initiator Michael Fuchs, sustainability expert at SCC EVENTS, describes the plogging run as follows: “Despite poor weather conditions, a small, dedicated group collected several bags of waste in the Tiergarten and along Straße des 17. Juni. We were frequently approached, and that was exactly the goal: to raise awareness and visibility for responsible waste behavior—both at events and in everyday interaction with nature.”
