Hydration Systems at the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON – Essential for Strong, Stable and Sustainable Performance
Anyone running a half marathon knows how important proper hydration is. Over 21 kilometers, the body loses water and essential minerals that are crucial for performance and well-being. Many runners therefore use their own hydration systems in addition to the refreshment stations, allowing them to drink flexibly and without losing time at any moment.
With these hydration systems, the use of single-use cups and the resulting waste can be significantly reduced. Personal hydration systems can be easily refilled along the route at five convenient refill stations. These refill stations are located at the last table of the water supply at each refreshment point and are marked with a refill station sign. They make a valuable contribution to sustainability and help conserve resources.

Hydration on the Course – Cups & More Sustainable Alternatives
In addition to your own hydration system, we of course ensure reliable hydration along the route. At the refreshment points, cups made from recycled PET are provided. They are sturdy, highly recyclable and collected after the race for proper processing.
Nonetheless, we encourage you to go one step further. Personal hydration systems are not only practical, but they also help reduce the use of single-use cups and support us in further minimizing waste. Those who rely on such systems make a particularly meaningful contribution to the sustainability of the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON while benefiting from a more flexible and efficient hydration routine.

Handheld Bottles – Maximum Directness and Lightness
Handheld bottles are small drinking bottles with a hand strap for direct carrying. They offer a very simple way to stay hydrated and are lightweight, compact and ergonomically shaped to fit naturally in the hand.
Advantages:
- Immediate access: No effort required – just lift the bottle and drink.
- Ultra-light feel: Innovative materials and the hand strap make the bottle barely noticeable.
- Quick refills: The bottle can be refilled within seconds at our refreshment stations, supporting your personal best pace.
- Climate-friendly: A reusable bottle reduces waste and makes your run more sustainable.
- Perfect for minimalists: Ideal for runners who prefer minimal gear without sacrificing effectiveness.
Waist and Belt Systems – Free Hands and Optimal Weight Distribution
Hydration belts and waist systems are popular among marathon runners. They consist of a comfortable, wide belt that sits snugly on the hips and secures small bottles or compact containers. They combine efficient hydration with great freedom of movement and a very natural running feel.
Advantages:
- Natural running style: With hands free, running feels smooth and unrestricted.
- Flexible setup: Systems can be equipped with one or multiple bottles as needed.
- Practical storage: Extra pockets offer space for valuables or energy bars — secure and accessible.
- Ideal for long distances: Comfortable even over many hours.
- Minimal upper body strain: Neck, shoulders and back remain relaxed — perfect for runners sensitive to upper-body pressure or friction.
Hydration Backpacks – Constant Supply and Maximum Independence
Hydration backpacks, also known as hydration packs, are a comfortable solution for long runs or races in hot conditions. Inside the backpack is a flexible water reservoir, usually holding 1–3 liters. A drinking tube with a bite or click valve allows you to drink anytime without breaking your running rhythm.
Advantages:
- Consistent hydration: Small sips anytime, without interrupting your stride.
- High capacity: Holds far more liquid than bottles, reducing reliance on refreshment stations and saving time.
- Extra storage: Like belt systems, hydration backpacks offer practical space for gels, bars or valuables.
- Excellent comfort: Lightweight, breathable and ergonomically shaped to minimize movement.
- Durable: Built from robust, tear-resistant materials designed for many kilometers and years of use.
Softflasks – Flexible, Quiet and Especially Comfortable
Softflasks are made from flexible materials and shrink as you drink, becoming smaller and fitting naturally to the body. They can be stored in running belts, chest pockets or backpacks and are popular with runners who value minimal weight, comfort and maximum freedom of movement.
Advantages:
- Compact system: The flask shrinks as you drink, becoming lighter and more streamlined.
- Extremely lightweight: Perfect for runners who count every gram.
- No sloshing noise: The soft material prevents water from sloshing — a mental relief during long races.
- Space-efficient: Easy to store in pockets and belts of all kinds.
- Long-lasting: Made from durable materials that withstand many races.
