Media Guide for the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON 2024

Information for journalists

Foreword by the managing directors

  • As the organiser of the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON, SCC EVENTS is looking forward to a peaceful festival for athletes on the first weekend in April. We welcome well over 36,000 athletes who will be competing in handbiking, wheelchair racing, skating and running with the aim of celebrating the start of the endurance sports community's season together as part of the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON. We want this international event to be seen as a clear and active sign of peaceful, inclusive coexistence. It is also in the tradition of the event to give top athletes and amateur athletes the opportunity to achieve their personal goals together. This has characterised the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON for decades. We are proud to have captured this sporting zeitgeist so early on. We are also proud of the fact that the event will see more athletes on the streets of Berlin than ever before.

As of this year, participation in the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON counts towards the ranking of the SuperHalfs series. The SuperHalfs are an association of originally five, now six, renowned organisers of running events from Lisbon, Prague, Berlin, Copenhagen, Cardiff and Valencia. The concept of the series promotes a sense of community and achievement, inspiring athletes to realise their full running potential while discovering the country and people of each host city. Those who finish all six prestigious races in the SuperHalfs series are crowned SuperRunners and receive an exclusive medal.

Ever more popular and ever faster - that's how the current situation surrounding the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON can be summarised. With over 36,000 participants in all competitions from 100 countries, the field at the starting line is impressive. The demand was correspondingly high and the starting places were booked out in record time.  One reason for the great interest in the race in Berlin is certainly the fast course. If you want a new best time, you start on the Spree.

With over 26,000 finishers and a record number of female runners (around 40 per cent), the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON 2023 was faster than ever at the top end: 32 men ran times of under 65:00 minutes, for the first time over 100 athletes stayed under 70:00 (104); 25 women finished in under 1:15:00 hours and as many as 67 stayed under 1:20:00 hours. For the first time in the history of athletics, more than 2,000 runners stayed under 1:30 hours in a half marathon. Incidentally, the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON was recently awarded the elite label as a quality criterion by World Athletics, the umbrella organisation for all national athletics federations.

Whether it's the carefree togetherness, the SuperHalfs series, a possible personal best time, the joy of the course, our efforts in all aspects of sustainability or the legendary Berlin audience that draws you to Berlin - enjoy the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON 2024 and make it an inspiring experience. SCC EVENTS would like to thank all partners such as Generali and adidas and the more than 1,500 volunteers, without whom such an event would not be possible. We would also like to thank the Berlin Senate and the Berlin authorities for the trust they have placed in us, which enables us to organise a peaceful major sporting event. In this way, we can give the city of Berlin a friendly, active face that all participants can carry out into the world.

On behalf of SCC EVENTS, we wish you every success with your reporting and lots of fun at the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON 2024.

Elite race/athlete profiles

  • Very fast races and some great results can be expected at the 43rd edition of the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON on 7th April. Records may well be in reach in the men’s and women’s races. Six runners with personal bests of sub one hour are on the start list and the one to watch is Daniel Ebenyo.
Kenya’s silver medallist from last year’s World Half Marathon Championships is in superb form and must be regarded as the favorite, despite the fact that he is not the fastest on the start list. While Ebenyo intends to significantly improve the course record of 58:42 there is a German favorite in the women’s race: Melat Kejeta could produce a rare home victory and if she should reach top form she might even attack the European record.

GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON is a “Label Road Race”

A number of other German elite runners will run the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON. And for some of them the target is to qualify for the European Championships in Rome in June. For the first time the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON is a “Label Road Race“ (elite label) of the international athletics federation “World Athletics“.

    The Men´s Race

It would be a major upset if the winner of the men’s race would not be an athlete from Kenya. All the six runners that have personal bests of sub 60 minutes are from Kenya. On paper Mathew Kimeli is the fastest of the group with a PB of 58:43 from 2021. This is just one second slower than the Berlin course record of fellow-Kenyan Eric Kiptanui who clocked 58:42 in 2018. 25 year-old Kimeli showed fine form last year, when he ran his second fastest half marathon with 59:00 in Valencia.

But Kimelis’ fellow-Kenyan Daniel Ebenyo is most likely the athlete to beat in Berlin. The 28 year-old has not yet run a sub 59:00 and his PB stands at 59:04. But since taking the runner-up spot in the World Half Marathon Championships in Riga, Latvia, last October Daniel Ebenyo has won all of the following races. Among these was a victory in Kalkutta’s 25k race with a world best time of 1:11:13. This record he set in India indicates that Ebenyo should be capable of running well under the course record in the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON. Another runner from Kenya who could do very well in Berlin is Bravin Kiprop. He took the Sevilla Half Marathon earlier this year and improved to 59:21, which at that time was a world leading time.

Koen Naert is among the leading European runners. The Belgian has great memories of Berlin since he won the European Championships’ marathon gold medal here in 2018. He has a half marathon PB of 61:38. Simon Boch is the fastest German on the start list with 61:23 while Samuel Fitwi returns to the race where he set his personal record of 61:44 a year ago. Boch has already achieved the 61:40 qualifying standard for the European Championships in June. Fitwi still needs to run this time and as a number of other athletes hopes to do so on the fast Berlin course.

    The Women´s Race

The last time there was a German victory in the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON was 15 years ago: In 2009 Sabrina Mockenhaupt was the winner with 68:45. Four years earlier Luminita Zaituc took the honors in 71:04. This time a home victory would not be a surprise. Germany’s record holder Melat Kejeta, who also holds the European women only record (races without male pacemakers) returns to the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON. In 2020 Kejeta produced a major upset at the World Half Marathon Championships in Gdynia, where she won the silver medal and clocked her PB of 65:18.
If she should reach top form Kejeta intends to attack her PB. In this case she would also attack the European record for mixed races. Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands holds this mark with 65:15. It remains to be seen if the course record could be threatened in the process. Kenya’s Sheila Kiprotich Chepkirui ran 65:02 here in 2022.

Her former fellow-countrywomen Ftaw Zeray and Yalemget Yaregal from Ethiopia will probably be the strongest opponents for Melat Kejeta. Zeray has a PB of 66:04 while Yaregal was third at the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON last year in 66:27. Melat Kejeta has indeed won the race before. But when she took Germany’s most prestigious half marathon in 2018 with 69:04 she still competed for Ethiopia. A year later Melat Kejeta received German citizenship.

Switzerland’s half marathon record holder Fabienne Schlumpf is the second fastest European runner on the start list. She has a personal record of 68:27. Germans Deborah Schöneborn (69:41), who competes for Marathon Team Berlin of event organiser SCC EVENTS, and Miriam Dattke (69:43) have both already run sub 70:00. Deborah Schöneborn’s PB came within the qualifying period for the European Championships and Esther Pfeiffer recently managed to run under the qualifying time of 70:30 as well. The wife of German marathon runner Hendrik Pfeiffer, who will also compete in Berlin, surprisingly improved to 70:24. Schöneborn and Pfeiffer both hope to be selected for the continental championships in Rome as do a number of other German competitors.

History

  • 42. GENERALI BERLINER HALF MARATHON 2023:

    Eilish McColgan smashes British rekcrd

Smashing the British record Eilish McColgan took the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON with 65:43. This also remained the European lead for 2023 and the Scot became the fourth fastest European half marathon runner ever. The 32 year-old improved her own national record time of 66:26 by 43 seconds. The fastest runner on the start list became the winner: Sabastian Sawe of Kenya finished in a strong 59:00 minutes. Samuel Fitwi was the best German with a personal best of 61:44 in 9th place while Deborah Schöneborn, who competes for Marathon Team Berlin, took 12th position in 72:12. There were slightly over 26,000 finishers.

While 34 men broke 65:00 minutes there was a total of over 100 runners who ran sub 70:00. 25 women finished sub 1:15 and 67 sub 1:20. All these are record marks for the race and show at the same time the impact of the new carbon running shoes.

  • Seeing the finish line just 150 metres after passing the Brandenburg Gate is an unforgettable running experience for the half marathon finishers. The 21.0975-km-route through Berlin is a very special kind of sightseeing tour. As you run, you will pass some of the most striking sights in the German capital. No city tour, no matter how brisk, can match the amount of historical and cultural monuments that can be covered here in a short space of time.

    From Charlottenburg Palace to Ku'damm

From the start, you set off for the first few metres, with the Victory Column in front of you and the Brandenburg Gate behind you. Past the Technical University and across Ernst-Reuter-Platz, the course runs straight ahead for four kilometres to Charlottenburg Palace. Here the course takes a sharp left into Schlossstraße. Before reaching Kurfürstendamm, Berlin's most popular shopping boulevard, the course runs for around three kilometres with a detour over the highest point of the half marathon route past the idyllic Lietzensee lake. This is followed by a few hundred metres slightly downhill along Kantstraße, where you pick up speed for the rest of the journey. On the Ku'damm, the beat of the live music increases.

Through the Brandenburg Gate to the finish line

Past the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the participants head straight across Wittenbergplatz, past the KaDeWe department store and across Nollendorfplatz to Potsdamer Straße. Shortly after Potsdamer Platz, the route turns eastwards, past the legendary Checkpoint Charlie to Gendarmenmarkt. The most beautiful historical square in Berlin with the theatre, the French and German cathedrals is another highlight of the route. The final kilometres follow from here. These run along the boulevard Unter den Linden to the Brandenburg Gate before crossing the landmark of the former division of Berlin 150 metres before the finish. You can't imagine a more emotional finish! The course is flat and fast, so it's always good for an attempt to beat your personal best time if that's your goal.

SCC EVENTS

  • The origins of today's SCC EVENTS GmbH date back to 1964, when a group of students from the Free University of Berlin - who were also members of SC Charlottenburg - organised the first Berlin cross-country run.
of SC Charlottenburg - organised the first Berlin cross-country race, which took place on Teufelsberg. The first competitions for amateur athletes were organised, called Volksläufe, until then only club members were allowed to take part in running competitions. The organiser of the first SCC cross-country race was still the sports department of the FU Berlin at the time, as the SCC did not receive permission for a race in which non-club runners could also start.

In 1965, the sports department and SCC organised the cross-country race together, and from 1966 the club organised it alone. After the cross-country race, other smaller races were organised before the athletes of SC Charlottenburg launched the BERLIN-MARATHON in 1974, which initially took place in Grunewald. The development of the BERLIN-MARATHON was decisive for the emergence of other running events. In 1981, after a long tug-of-war with the authorities and with the support of the US armed forces in West Berlin, the first BERLIN- MARATHON took place through the streets of West Berlin. This was followed in the 1980s by races that have developed into the biggest in Germany to this day, from the BERLIN
HALF MARATHON, the Women's Race Berlin and the 5 x 5k team-relay in Berlin's Tiergarten. The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 gave a further boost
Berlin's major running events received a further boost.

The BERLIN-MARATHON has risen to the elite of international road races. It has been running through the Brandenburg Gate and former East Berlin since 1990 and has had its finish line at the Brandenburg Gate since 2003. 13 world records have been set at the BERLIN-MARATHON, more than at any other marathon in the world; the last was set in 2023 by Ethiopian Tigst Assefa (2:11:53).

In recent years, the Berliner Wasserbetriebe 5 x 5k TEAM-Relay in the Tiergarten (this year in May, otherwise in June), which started in 2000 with around 1,000 participants and now approximately 28,000. Founded in the mid-1980s, SCC EVENTS GmbH is now one of the largest organisers of sporting events in the world. In addition to the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON and the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON, the events include the KoRo Women's Race Berlin, the StWB TEAM Relay Brandenburg (4 x 5 km) in Brandenburg an der Havel (both in May), the SwimRun Rheinsberg at the end of June (swimming/running), the GENERALI VeloCity Berlin cycle race (3/4 August) and the adidas Runners City Night.

  • The Marathon Team Berlin will be represented at the Olympic Games in Paris in the summer: Germany's fastest marathon runner Amanal Petros confidently qualified for the games. The 28-year-old moved from TV Wattenscheid to Marathon Team Berlin, which is part of SCC EVENTS, the organizer of major sporting events such as the GENERALI BERLINER HALF MARATHON and the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON, just over a year ago.

In the new jersey, Amanal Petros continued his high flight in 2023. At the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON in September he finished ninth after 2:04:58 hours, making him the first German to break the 2:05 hour barrier. This time by Amanal Petros would have been a world record a good 20 years ago. It was the first German men's record in the 50-year history of the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON.

The improvement of his own national best time by 1:29 minutes (previously 2:06:27) is the most significant increase in the German record since Olympic marathon champion Waldemar Cierpinski became the first German runner to stay under 2:10 hours in 1976 (2:09:55 ). Amanal Petros seems to be on the way to catching up with the world's best and could achieve a very good placing at the Olympics. He is currently the sixth fastest European of all time and has even passed former British running superstar Mo Farah on this list.

However, Deborah Schöneborn was unlucky in the race for an Olympic starting place. She missed Olympic qualification at the Houston Marathon in January by an annoying 23 seconds. A time of 2:24:31 would have been necessary to book the third German starting place in Paris. “Debbie” Schöneborn crossed the finish line in Houston in 2:24:54, having only lost the crucial seconds in the last seven kilometers. In fourth place, she improved her previous personal best of 2:25:52 by almost exactly one minute.

“Shortly after crossing the finish line, I was disappointed because I narrowly missed the Olympic qualifying time. I was still in time until about 35 km, then the Olympics basically slipped out of my hands,” said Deborah Schöneborn. “Overall, it went okay, but not as well as I had hoped after the training and performance diagnostics.” The Berlin native immediately adjusted her next goals. The half marathon at the European Championships in Rome in the summer is now high on the agenda. With her personal best time of 69:41 minutes, which she ran last year, she has already met the standard here. “Instead of the Olympic marathon in Paris, I will probably run in the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON in September.” As number four in the race for the three Olympic starting places, Deborah Schöneborn is also in the position of reserve runner for the games in Paris.
After a foot injury stopped her around a year ago, Rabea Schöneborn was no longer in the marathon shape she had hoped for in 2023. In Berlin, Deborah's twin sister gave up the race at the end of September, in Valencia at the beginning of December she was unable to maintain the pace and finally crossed the finish line after 2:31:05. Then Rabea Schöneborn had bad luck when she started the half marathon in Houston at the beginning of January. The Berliner was hampered by a cold and ended the race there early.

Things have also been very unfortunate for Alina Reh for a long time. Just over a year ago she improved to 68:42 minutes in the half marathon in Seville. But after a competitor accidentally kicked her in the Achilles tendon in the 5,000 m race at the German Championships in the summer, nothing worked for the entire year of 2023. So the hoped-for step towards the marathon will have to wait.

The situation was similarly difficult for young hopeful Blanka Dörfel. The 21-year-old initially suffered from foot problems for a long time, then health problems followed. But it is possible that she will start at the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON. Johannes Motschmann has firmly planned this race. After the tough World Championship marathon in Budapest in August, the run on the first Sunday in April is a good way to assess your current situation. For Johannes Motschmann, the half marathon at the European Championships in Rome in June could be a goal.

Sports & Medicine

  • Medical care at the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON 2024

From minor to emergency care - the medical department of the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON is prepared for everything. All medical support systems will be activated before the start in order to provide competent assistance as quickly as possible in the event of any complaints or emergencies on the course and at the finish. As in previous years, medical care for the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON has been planned on the basis of a comprehensive concept which, as part of the safety concept for the event as a whole, provides in particular for networking with all systems and institutions in the state of Berlin.

Das „Medical Team“ of the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON

The running course is entered into the Berlin fire brigade's emergency rescue system to the metre, so that the coordination and control centre can guarantee the fastest possible arrival time so that medical measures can be implemented with pinpoint accuracy. The locations of the stationary units are indicated by signs and so-called "beach flags" labelled "First AID / First Aid Station".  In addition, Johanniter Unfallhilfe (JUH) will ensure a high density of medical care along the route with mobile teams on motorbikes ("first responders") as well as with vehicles. The emergency services are always positioned at the roadside and are easily recognisable. The high standard is also maintained in the finish area, where, according to data collected in recent years, over two thirds of all assistance was provided. Specialists from intensive care and rescue medicine are also deployed here under the direction of experienced emergency doctors and sports physicians from the organiser, the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON Medical Team.

Medical coordination centre of the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON

The medical aspects of the event will be managed by the organiser's medical board (medical operations management), the Berlin fire brigade/emergency rescue service and the medical service via a medical coordination centre (KOMED). All other aspects will be managed by a central coordination centre (KOST) outside the event site with the involvement of all institutions (police, fire brigade, rescue services, security service, authorities, traffic management, organiser). Here, all situations and situations, from severe weather situations to potential major incidents on the weekend of the event, can be managed quickly and in a structured manner and, for example, the quickest possible changes to the deployment strategy can be decided and implemented if necessary.

GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON Doping Tests

The first three men and women will be tested. Additionally up to 50 men and 30 women can be tested. The lottery will be carried out by World Athletics (WA) or by a responsible person of the National Anti Doping Agency Germany (NADA). The doping tests will be carried out by an institution, which is certified and licensed by the NADA and WA. The doping tests include pre-competition tests (blood tests) and in-competition tests (urine).

  • The SCC EVENTS medical team offers an easy-to-perform health test that anyone can easily undergo.
The so-called PAPS test can be carried out   here >>, but it is also offered as part of the registration process for SCC EVENTS events. The test allows you to find out how healthy you are and to what extent you are able to exercise. Depending on the results of the test, behavioural advice is given.

When registering for an SCC EVENTS event, this PAPS test must be completed before registration can continue.

  • Since 2019 Generali Deutschland AG has been the title sponsor of the second largest running in Germany - the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON.

The nationwide initiative “Generali bewegt Deutschland” aims to motivate people to lead active and health-conscious lives. Taking part, not just watching, is the key to this initiative. Generali Germany has set itself the goal of improving the lives of people in our society. Community involvement, sustainable thinking and action, and preventive health care are therefore central guiding principles in the selection of sponsoring measures and partners. This is also reflected in our engagement to the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON: Together with the event organizer, we have initiated numerous measures to promote environmental and climate protection. These includes the use of green power, the avoidance and sorting of waste, the offer of free tickets for public transport and the introduction of a reusable cup system to reduce plastic waste.

For Generali, sustainability also means social commitment in sports. The Human Safety Net, Generali’s global initiative, creates new sports and exercise opportunities for children through donations, among other things, and thus supports disadvantaged families with young children. The donation collected at GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON will benefit the SOS-Family Centre Berlin.

In addition to the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON, the company is also the title sponsor of the GENERALI MUNICH MARATHON, the GENERALI COLOGNE MARATHON and partner of the BMW Berlin Marathon.

In addition to running, as a premium partner of the German Tennis Federation, Generali wants to get more people interested in tennis with its “Generali Tennis Starter” campaign. Furthermore, since 2022 Generali, together with its distribution partner Deutsche Vermögensberatung, has been a national sponsor of Deutsche Sporthilfe.

  • SUPERCOMFORT. SUPERNOVA

Adidas Running presents the new Supernova for maximum comfort with every step.

The basis for the development process of the running shoe was a study conducted by adidas, revealing that comfort holds a special priority when choosing running shoes. Based on these findings and years of experience in the development of performance running shoes for athletes of all levels, the product team has managed to combine the benefits of technologies from other adidas Running product families in the Supernova.

The result is Dreamstrike+, a new midsole foam that provides comfort and cushioning with every step. This technology is complemented by the Support Rod System, which is embedded in the outsole. Inspired by the physiology of the foot, it facilitates the rolling behavior and ensures additional stability. The synergy of these technologies ensures the best possible running experience at all levels of distance. Another important product feature is the Comfort Heel Fit, a combination of cushioning foam and soft textile, providing a comfortable fit and support in the heel area.

The Supernova is now available as both a women's and men's model at specialized running stores, selected Intersport shops and on Supernova | adidas DE
